The Books They Gave Me

In which we reflect on books given us by loved ones.

Dickens.

This was a going-to-college present marking one of the most significant transitions of my life that included leaving my family and my country and immersing myself in a completely foreign country, language, and culture.

He is everything a man should be: confident, intelligent, entrepreneurial, courageous, adventurous, wise, handsome… the list can go on forever. He is one of the few men in my life, whom I truly look up to, respect, and admire. He was my English tutor, my mentor, my role model.

He is responsible for half of my English vocabulary, and if I could ever claim myself a writer of any eloquence, I would owe it to him. His patient guidance and teaching throughout my high school career have given me knowledge beyond words and their literal meaning but the ideas and strength they carry. He has shown me that with ambition and passion, anything is possible and that I am capable of anything. That, his belief in my potential, is the greatest gift and the greatest expectation.
